Background & Objective

Background

The environmental crisis that occured following the industrial revolution had brought about the idea of pushing down the effects of development, and sustaining the nature. Awareness of this environmental crisis has grown since 1970s, which was driven mainly by the emergence of environmental disasters over the globe. The idea of harmonizing the human development with the society and the environment has stimulated scientists, activists, and policy makers to propose new concepts, strategies, or roadmaps of development in order to avoid pressures on the environment and society aleniation.

A prominent pioneer and scholar in the field of Environment from Universitas Padjadjaran, Prof. Otto Soemarwoto, with other international colleagues have raised a new concept of development in UN Conference of Human Environment in Stockholm in 1972. i.e. Eco-development. Eco-development means ecologically sound development which is striving to achieve harmony instead of creating conflict between man and nature or more specifically between society and its physical environment. The great idea of eco-development had further moved forward and was adopted in various world conventions/institutions such as UNEP in 1973, WCED (World Commission on Environment and Development) in 1983, and Brundtland Commission in 1987; the latter had also proposed a new paradigm of development originated from eco-development, the sustainable development. As a matter of fact, Otto Soemarwoto and his thought was inspiring and influential in worldwide scale.

This far, the concept of eco-development has been adopted for decades, and at present, the implementation of eco-development is challenging. The fact of global changing climate implies the failure of development bringing the environment into a concern it deserves. Studies also argue that political authoritarianism and coercion in many countries have greatly contributed to the failure of development. They have led to the dissociation of development from social needs. Thereby, looking back the implementation of the eco-development over the years will be advantageous. We need to redirect the eco-development to the right way to go.

Referring to Otto's great thought and achievement as well as the present state of eco-development, in commemoration of Dies Natalis 60th of Universitas Padjadjaran, we would like to honor him by organizing an "International (Outdoor) Seminar on Eco-development". In this occasion, we present "Eco-development: Revisited" as the seminar theme.

Objectives

The seminar will discuss the challenges of eco-development in the context of policy, strategy and practices, and try to get insights which are valuable to redirect the eco-development the right way to go.
